How many toilets does Cal/OSHA require on a construction site?
Cal/OSHA Title 8, Section 1526 requires at least 1 toilet for every 20 workers on a California construction site, counted for each sex. A site with 35 workers needs at least 2 toilets. The rule is stricter than federal OSHA, which allows 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers once a crew passes 20.
| Workers | Cal/OSHA 1526 | Federal OSHA 1926.51 Table D-1 |
|---|---|---|
| 20 or fewer | 1 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 | 1 seat + 1 urinal |
| 41–60 | 3 | 2 seats + 2 urinals |
| 200 or more | 1 per 20 | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 |

Does Cal/OSHA require handwashing on jobsites?
Cal/OSHA Title 8, Section 1527 requires washing facilities on construction sites, with water, soap and a way to dry hands. A two-sink hand washing station next to the toilets, or flushing units with built-in sinks, meets the need for most crews.

Legal minimum versus a practical count
The legal minimum keeps you compliant; a practical count keeps units from filling between weekly services. For a 40-hour week with weekly service, plan 1 unit per 10 workers. A 20-worker crew is legal with 1 toilet but is better served by 2.
Heat and servicing on Yuba-Sutter jobsites
In July and August, Yuba City jobsites often pass 100°F, which speeds up odor and tank use. Cal/OSHA's heat illness rule (8 CCR 3395) also calls for water and shade. Add a second weekly service or one more unit for crews of 10 or more during heat waves.
